REINVENTING THE REAL
JEAN BAUDRILLARD 2007-2017

N. XXIII, March 2017

edited by Daniela Angelucci, Eleonora de Conciliis, Enrico Schirò

Jean Baudrillard’s thought crosses a large part of the current world phenomena (war, information, media and communication, marxism’s crisis, terrorism, photography, architecture, clonation, etc.). Most of the keywords of his thought – “symbolic exchange”, “hyperreality”, “simulacrum” – continues to proliferate in the recent philosophical-cultural production, as far as this has provided a valiant conceptual framework in order to understand the complex phenomena of globalization. For these reasons, ten years from his passing, Lo Sguardo dedicates to this unclassifiable thinker a monographic issue, which intends to examine his rich and stratified cultural milieu and to investigate his deep effect on the contemporary philosophical, sociological, aesthetical and political thought. Indeed, it proves the demand to think over the contemporary through a critical use of baudrillardian concepts, that is ‘reinventing the real as fiction’ thanks to the burning lens of irony towards reality.

“Lo Sguardo” encourages scholars in philosophy, politics, sociology, economics, aesthetics and similar studies to contribute at the XXIII issue, considering these three prospective thematic areas:

CFP/1 – Genealogies: the first section will be dedicated to the various and complex theoretical roots and to the cultural milieu of Baudrillard’s thought. Papers for this section could take in consideration the relationship between Baudrillard and literature, Marxism, Situationism, sociology, semiology, the Frankfurt School, Phenomenology and post-phenomenological philosophy.

CFP/2 – Surfaces: the second section will be dedicated to areas of study which Baudrillard himself cultivated in his sharping and unconventional way (visual arts, architecture, anthropology, etc.), and also to concepts which Baudrillard developed or thought over in this similar unusual way (simulacrum, virtual, seduction, etc.). Papers for this section could take in consideration the relationship between Baudrillard and aesthetics, anthropology, photography, technological objects, etc.

CFP/3 – Anamorphosis: the third section will be dedicated to Baudrillard’s legacy and presence in contemporary thought. Papers in this section could take in consideration neoliberal capitalism and its ‘saturation’, economic and financial crisis, biopolitics, US society and culture from 9/11 up to nowadays, the connection between war and terrorism, post-ecological politics, etc.
