Descartes’s Phantom
Diderot’s relationship with Descartes is generally defined as one of opposition. More specifically, D’Alembert’s theorization of biological materialism in Le Rêve de D’Alembert is the antithesis of Cartesian metaphysics. On the contrary, this paper aims to demonstrate that, in his opposition to Descartes, Diderot remained profoundly Cartesian. The first clue to this re-examination is the position that D’Alembert assigns to Descartes in the Encyclopédie: one of criticism, but also one of reverence. The criticism of metaphysics is already present in Descartes himself. Finally, Cartesian philosophy and the philosophy of experience cannot be set against each other, for Descartes bases his philosophy on a particular type of experience, namely the thought experiment. And it is precisely this method that Diderot adopts. In refuting metaphysics (scholasticism), Descartes divides himself from himself in order to found his metaphysics. D’Alembert adopts that division process to distance himself from Descartes while at the same time appropriating him, and Diderot uses the same process in Le Rêve de D’Alembert to position himself in relation to D’Alembert. I propose to define the resulting thinking device as one of phantomatization.
