Memory, Individual, and World. Itineraries Between Leibniz and Hegel
This paper analyses the role of memory in two key Western philosophers: Leibniz and Hegel. By examining the specific passages in which this topic is mostly dealt with, it will be shown how memory is the main factor for the appearance, at a conscious level, of both the subject as an ‘I’ and the object as a world. While establishing, on one hand, the discriminating factor between the unconscious and the conscious in Leibniz, on the other, it will be explained how recollection and memory are for Hegel the source of the emergence both of the subject as individual and the world as reign of language.
