In the course in the Collège de France of 1904-1905, Bergson analyzes the various theories of freedom which were since Antiquity proposed. There he finds the opportunity to present the main aspects of his conception of the history of Philosophy. It is in this context that he lingers particularly on the case of Plotinus, whose position appears to him to be a synthesis as well as a revelation of the whole ancient philosophy. Bergson uses an original method to propose his interpretation of Plotinus’ thought. This method consists in following Plotinus’ movement, while indicating his limits in order to reorient those movements. In this paper, I wish to expose this original method and to show that it makes possible to understand more exactly other texts of Bergson, in which he also proposed an analysis of Plotinus’ theories.
