Hegel as a Reader of Diderot: ‘Le Neveu de Rameau’ in the Phenomenology of Spirit
In this article, I take into account the reception of Diderot’s Rameau’s Nephew in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. After a brief introduction focused on the reconstruction of the editorial history of Diderot’s dialogue, I will examine the passages of the Phenomenology in which Hegel refers to the Nephew. My aim is to show how Diderot’s text represent, from Hegel’s perspective, a perfect staging of the conflict between the noble (edelmütige) consciousness and the base (niederträchtige) consciousness. To do so, it will first be necessary to frame the context in which the assimilation of the French philosopher’s work takes place. Finally, I will address some critical points of the Hegelian interpretation of Rameau’s Nephew.
