INTERVISTE / 2 / Diego Maria Chece, Pietro Montani /
The destinies of imagination between cinema and digital. In dialogue with Pietro Montani
This interview with the Italian philosopher Pietro Montani focuses on his recent work, Destini tecnologici dell’immaginazione (Technological Destinies of Imagination), in which he articulates the deep, interwoven, and historically situated relationship between imagination and technologies. In the interview, Montani expounds upon pivotal themes delineated in his work, encompassing the salience of cinema in engendering the multimodal and technically embedded nature of human imagination. The discussion extends to a profound reevaluation of Simondonian techno-aesthetics, culminating in an engagement with the themes of externalization and of the digital domain. Montani posits the latter as a prospective successor to cinema within the context of our evolving technological milieu. Moreover, the discourse encompasses reflections concerning the political essence of technologies, drawing from Benjamin’s insights. Additionally, a scholarly comparison with Stiegler is undertaken, exploring the ramifications of technologies on human faculties.
