Whitehead’s philosophy can be interpreted as a vast inquiry into the experience of the Moderns: how did they invent a particular conception of nature? Which interests did it correspond to? What were its effects and its limits? Where do their ontologies come from? The huge diagnostic that Whitehead provides with respect to the modern experience is deeply indebted to Bergson’s philosophy which he continuously refers to. This article aims at determining the real influence that Bergson’s philosophy had on Whitehead’s. Along the lines of this interrogation it accounts for the constitution of some of the crucial tendencies within contemporary metaphysics.
