The History of Philosophy as the History of the “Problematic”: Deleuze as a Reader of Lautmant

This article explores the pivotal influence of Albert Lautman on Deleuze’s philosophy, focusing on the shift from a dialectics of ideas in the history of mathematics (Lautman) to a problematic, non-historicist conception of the history of philosophy (Deleuze). Starting from Difference and Repetition, where Lautman’s theory of problems provides the framework for a dramatic transcendental empiricism, Deleuze extends this model in What Is Philosophy? to define philosophy as the continuous reactivation of the virtual through the creation of concepts. The study highlights how Deleuze radicalizes Lautman’s insights, making the history of philosophy the privileged site for the interplay between immanence and concepts, turning philosophical history into a dynamic field of becoming.
