The Cry and the Song: Aristotle, Deleuze, Metaphysics

For Deleuze, Aristotle is placed in the wake of the ‘dogmatic and moralizing image of thought’, desired by Plato and strengthened precisely by the Stagirite, then by Thomas, Descartes, Kant, Hegel and Husserl. It is however to a principle that they return as to the same ‘image of thought’, insurmountable and problematic, a whole that is not fully available, the absolute horizon that every philosopher judges relative in those who have glimpsed it before him. From the comparison between the two carried forward in this article, immanence emerges as the instance common to both in transcending their capacities, in not giving peace to thought, in making them sing with joy, when they create a concept, and cry out in despair, when they discover that the enigma of the principle is not resolved. The meaning of metaphysics, a term with a notoriously bumpy history, will be identified precisely in the force exerted on thought by a principle that pushes the thinker’s capacities beyond the common.
