Ecstasy in Psychology in the Late Nineteenth Century. Les tendances by James H. Leuba
This paper aims to situate the topic of ecstasy within the medical and psycho-philosophical discussions of the last years of the XIX century. In order to do that, it focuses on a specific essay of a not so well-known author and its relations to such ‘giants’ as William James, Théodule Ribot, and, more generally, to the pathological conception of mysticism in French-speaking countries. The bonds between aesthetic and moral levels in the words of Leuba are highlighted.
