Deleuze and His Stoics: On the Sources of Logic of Sense

This contribution explores the relationship between Stoicism and Deleuze’s philosophy through a comparative analysis of Logic of Sense and key works on ancient Stoicism by Bréhier, Goldschmidt and Schuhl. The first section examines the role of Stoic thought within Deleuzian noology, referencing critical studies that question stoicism’s centrality. The second part analyzes Bréhier’s work, the conceptual background from which Deleuze draws the notion of the incorporeal and the depth/surface’s distinction. The third section investigates the connections between Stoic time and ethics in the Goldschmidt version and Deleuze’s dual theory of time (Aiôn/Chronos) alongside his ethics of counter-actualization. The final part considers the paradox’s role in Stoic logic as discussed by Schuhl, highlighting how this enables Deleuze to challenge the law of non-contradiction within the realm of sense. The conclusion seeks to integrate Stoicism into transcendental empiricism and trace it influences in Deleuze’s broader work.
